Midsummer Magic

A word of warning - this post is EXTREMELY photo heavy. Apologies in advance for crashing your computer - but the light was astonishing and I couldn't stop taking pictures. None of these photos have been re-touched and all of them were taken with my phone.

It didn't feel like our Midsummer Fairy Picnic was a whole entire year ago when suddenly the Summer Solstice was upon us again. I was so preoccupied in the week running up to last Saturday that I had barely given a thought to how we would celebrate. Luckily, with children as young as mine, celebrations are easily created. All I have to do is tell them it's a special day and they are ready to accept anything and everything that happens as something extraordinary.

The weather was nothing short of glorious and so, I decided that a repeat of last years celebration would be just the thing to do. Easy, fun and because of the location, fittingly magical.

Last year there was a gang of us (my cousin and her family were visiting) but this year it was just me and my girls. We packed a picnic and followed the butterflies deep into the quiet woods to the 'fairy-castle' where, we ate and made merry.

My little fairy girls took turns playing 'Fairy-Queen and Servant' (or con-servant as Sábha insists it's pronounced).

And learning how to fly.

When they saw the photographic evidence of their success they were thrilled. Utterly delighted that they'd mastered flying, they seriously began to believe that they might just be real fairies.

Then, a woman came by with her dogs and made a wonderful show of being amazed at finding 'real fairies' in the woods (I could have hugged her). The girls smiled shyly at her and looked at me with eyes shining with Midsummer magic.

They were right to believe.

P.S. I am utterly overwhelmed by the amazingly supportive response to my last post. Thank you all so, so much. Thanks to you all, I feel ready and excited to take on the world!
