Beautiful Babies

My sister had her first baby a few days ago. A beautiful little girl. She is perfect, and petite and there is nothing on earth like her. Snuggling her sweet, brand new-ness brought me right back to the beginning of my own motherhood and I couldn't help but have a pang of longing for the days my girls were still delicious bundles of helplessness.

Meeting my newest niece prompted me to dig out a piece of film that was made when my girls were only ten weeks old and also features my new-mama sister. Seeing, again, how loving she is towards my tiny girls in the piece makes my heart burst with happiness for all she has to look forward to with her own little bundle of joy.

The video is an extract from a show called Taithí & Tae (Tea and Experience - the title sounds nicer in Irish) that was aired on TG4 in 2010. To be honest, I can barely remember the filming itself or... much at all... from Lile and Sábha's first year so this is such a precious keepsake to have.

It's been languishing, unwatched for a long, long time on the DVD the production company sent us after it was aired. I had always intended uploading it to YouTube, but the technical side of it seemed far too complicated for me to grasp. Last night, I finally sat down and figured it out. I converted files from billy to jack *, compressed things, did some very basic editing and eventually even managed to keep the subtitles intact (which the first attempt somehow failed to include.) I hope you enjoy it, now! Or at least click play out of sympathy for my labours!!

The girls shared that cot for the first few months of their lives. Until they got big enough to roll over and climb on each other. Once we separated them they slept better and seemed to really like the personal space. They haven't co-slept for years and on the rare occasion they need that physical comfort, they choose my bed over their sister's.

Imagine my surprise then, when after spending the evening watching this video (repeatedly) and bemoaning my girls' independence and lack of baby-ness, I went upstairs to find THIS:

The winter sleep-suits were NOT my idea, I promise. Sweaty babies.
My two little darlings curled up, asleep together for the first time in about five years. They're even wearing sleep-suits! (Horrible, sweaty, not-suitable-for-summer sleepsuits, but cute nonetheless!)

I obviously had to capture the moment on camera because I'm sure it'll be a while before it happens again and it made me so, so happy to see them like that. Neither of them had any recollection of it the next morning and found the photo hilarious, by the way... like, howling-laughing hilarious. They kind of rained on my nostalgia parade to be honest...

But anyway, it's still nice to know that not everything changes as time zips past. Babies will always be the most delightful things on the planet, twins will always be there for each other, sisters will share unspoken bonds and big occasions will always be marked with tea and cake.

Congratulations Cáit & Niall.

  1. Aw Sadhbh thank you so much for uploading such a wonderful memory. The joy and excitement in both you and your sisters voices is a joy to behold as well as your bundles of joy. Tea has become central to our lives now and I only started drinking it when I was pregnant! Congrats to Cáit and Niall x

    1. Thanks so much Danielle! I'm so glad I agreed to be a part of the show way back then - even though I was in such a fug of new-mamahood! Tea is a big deal here too. I used to only drink herbal tea but now I need the caffeine of the real stuff ;)

    1. Thanks Lisa! They were pretty tiny alright. They were *just* into newborn size clothes at that point. They took what felt like FOR. EV. ER to grow into real clothes and out of tiny-baby babygros! I'll definitely save this for the 21st and pass on your congrats xx
