Planes For Two

A couple of weeks ago the Airshow came to our town as part of the annual Summer Festival. Thousands upon thousands of people descend upon our local seafront every year to watch all kinds of airplanes do amazing stunts really close to the shore.

It's really fantastic and very impressive, but the beach gets really crowded and it can be a bit overwhelming so this year we decided to climb up a small mountain to the north-west of our town and watch the show from there. It was a great vantage point as you can see the entire coast from where we sat.

While Devo and I enjoyed the show, the girls were not very impressed at all. In fact they were bored pretty quickly and found other ways to amuse themselves - like picking bilberries/fraughan/fraochán and trying to make friends with the few other kids that were running around the mountaintop.

Then, a week later, courtesy of Disney, we got to go to the cinema to see a preview screening of Planes 2: Fire and Rescue. Now they are completely fascinated by airplanes and have been asking me when we can go up the mountain to see the planes again.

They only have an entire year to wait...

Anyway, they really enjoyed the movie and at least we can go and see those planes again if we want to!

“Planes: Fire & Rescue” is a new comedy-adventure about second chances, featuring a dynamic crew of elite firefighting aircraft devoted to protecting historic Piston Peak National Park from raging wildfire.

When world famous air racer Dusty learns that his engine is damaged and he may never race again, he must shift gears and is launched into the world of aerial firefighting.

Dusty joins forces with veteran fire-and-rescue helicopter Blade Ranger and his courageous team, including spirited air tanker Dipper, heavy-lift helicopter Windlifter, ex-military transport Cabbie and a lively bunch of brave all-terrain vehicles known as The Smokejumpers.

Together, the fearless team battles a massive wildfire and Dusty learns what it takes to become a true hero.

The girls enjoyed the movie very much. Lile's verdict was 'It was cool'... she's a woman of few words.

Sábha on the other hand, gushed about it. She liked the 'girl plane' (Dipper) the best and liked when 'they sprayed all the fire with red stuff' but she didn't like when Dusty was 'broken' and the big fire was scary.

Towards the end of the movie Sábha climbed over onto my lap to say 'I hope there's a happy ending' and to hide her eyes during some particularly scary parts. There are some very dramatic scenes so, be warned, if you are bringing sensitive little ones to see it.

Overall, even I found it to be quite enjoyable with plenty of the usual adult-directed one-liners to keep me entertained!

It opens in cinemas here on August 8th. Check out the trailer for a taste of what you're in for!
